She Runs - Top 10 World Marathons

Evelyn Hannon

I recently read an interesting article about marathon running written by Toronto Star sportswriter, Chris Young. In it he included his list of the top 10 running events around the world. It was that story that prompted me to prepare this travel-related article and I have used Chris' thumbnail sketches of each of the races he recommends.

A meaningful way to travel...

Females who love to travel constantly look for new challenges -- novel ways of exploring the world around them. We also keep our eyes open for interesting and challenging ways to keep our bodies healthy and in shape. Many Journey Women (of all ages) are now choosing to combine these two needs by training year-round for marathons held in foreign destinations. They prepare for the competition in their own city and actually run the race in major metropolis' worldwide. A perfect example of this new trend is JeansMarines (www.jeansmarines.com), a group of Canadian women who are presently training to run the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C. held annually in the month of October.

Sign on for a running clinic...

Depending on your needs you can choose to train on your own, with a close buddy or with your mom or daughter. If no one you know is interested, then sign on yourself for a running clinic offered by your neighbourhood sports shop. These weekly training sessions are wonderful; participants learn about topics like diet and building stamina as well as choosing the right equipment for the runner's particular needs. And chances are you'll find a compatible 'jogging and travel' partner in the group you run with. Many wonderful ideas are born and relationships cemented when two women jog side-by-side on an early morning run.

Choose your marathon...

The following is a list of ten recommended marathons -- some are closer to home while others require considerable travelling. We've included websites to acquaint you with each particular race -- the dates they are run, degree of difficulty, registration rules, etc. To that we've added a list of Journeywoman resources -- great female-centered travel information designed to help you pick the destination of your choice. Which one will it be, ladies? London, Paris, New York or......?
