A Journeywoman European Travel Tip Round-Up

Berlin, Germany...

If you appreciate women-centered art, then a visit to the Kathi Kollwitz Museum (located in a lovely old villa) is a must-see experience. Kollwitz deals with the poignant subject of mother and child and how this relationship is affected by war. Look carefully for the way this artist illustrates the enormous power of a caress or an embrace. Lovely! (Fasanenstrasse 24)

Istanbul, Turkey...

I heart kilimsIstanbul is packed with accommodations from the most luxe to humble hostels. For first or second time visitors the Old City, Sultanahmet, is a great choice to base yourself. There is so much to see, do and experience within an easy walk or tram ride in this vibrant neighborhood. One very good, centrally located, moderately priced choice is the intimate Hotel Djem with only twelve rooms and a lovely manager and staff. The Djemis a boutique hotel installed in a recently renovated wooden house just behind the Blue Mosque. The family that runs the hotel has been in the Carpet and Kilim business for years and the hotel is beautifully decorated with textiles. www.hoteldjem.com

Paris, France...

Paris InfoAsk any Montmartre resident where to lunch and you're likely to get the same answer: Relais Gascon! But with a caveat - you must have the salad! Not for nibblers, these Salades Géantes come full of lardons (bacon strips), chevre cheese, and herby, roasted potatoes. Beneath that bounty you will find some greens. Busy, bustling, friendly French waiters serve and bottles of wine are more than reasonable. There are two locations and every resident has their favorite of the two. But, either one will serve up a meal of a salad for less than 13 Euros in a lively, lovely Frenchie environment. (6, rue des Abbesses and 13, rue Joseph de Maistre.

Scandinavia...

Located right in the centre of Oslo, Norway the fabulous 130-year-old Grand Hotel has reserved an entire floor for women guests. Named after contemporary Norwegian female personalities in the arts, sports and business, the 13 rooms are designed to fit the needs of women travellers. En route to the rooms is a portrait corridor and the Ladies Floor Path, featuring paintings by local artist Trine Folmoe. The rooms have toiletries from L'Occitane, plenty of books and magazines, a CD and DVD-player, a yoga mat and a Ladies Floor room service menu (without the service charge) www.grand.no and www.grand.no/en/Hotelrooms--Suites/Ladies-Floor

Don't pack these things for Italy

I love ItalyYour hairdryer: Even budget hotels have them.

Spike heels: They get stuck in the cobblestones.

Shorts: You'll feel odd unless you're biking or on a beach.

Sneakers: Meaning your gym shoes or white sneakers. That said, comfortable shoes are important as you'll be doing lots of walking. Make sure you have good rubber soles, as leather slips on the slopes in the hill towns. These days Italian women sport fashionable flat-heeled boots or fancy colored sneakers for day wear.

Someone you know going to Europe?

Orange Delivery CarBe a good pal. Share this article with them. There is nothing like the woman's word of mouth advice that female travellers offer to each other.

Just copy this link: http://journeywoman.com/gfc/a-journeywoman-european-roundup.html and paste it into an email. Consider it a Bon Voyage gift. I know that they will appreciate it.
