| Wash and Blow Dry $5.00...
You read it right! At Marvel School of Hairdressing (25 Yorkville),
a hairdressing student will wash and blow dry your hair for just
$5.00. Add a buck or two if your hair is longer. Berkti was the
delightful student who took care of me. I tested the waters two
weeks running and was pleased with the care, consideration and,
of course, what my hair looked like when I left the salon. One word
of caution -- this is a school not a salon. The surroundings are
not glamorous or spotless and equipment is bare bones. However,
if you don't feel like packing your hairdryer, this could be an
interesting way of keeping your hair manageable while sightseeing.
Drop in to check the premises for yourself or call for an appointment
at 923 - 0991.

Great beautifying,
great therapy...
For my save-my-life hair, manicure, pedicure places, I go to some
wonderful small salons that are on the beaten path ...in one case
a walk-up on Yonge Street. The work is excellent, the prices are
reasonable and the advice/philosophy/therapy is free! Flory's is
at 3359 Yonge St. Suite #1, Tel: 488-3223. Or...
For hair (color/cut/ blow-dry) , I also recommend Shelley's (ask
for Eva). They're at 504 Eglinton West (near Avenue Rd). Tel: 489-3100

Best face forward...
For the greatest facial in town, check in with Helen Tsotsos, owner
of Esthetica at 440 Bloor Street West. Helen offers four delights
in one facial -- cleansing, relaxing, aromatherapy as well as therapy
for the soul. She's definitely number one in my beauty book! Helen
can be reached at 967-6374. Tell her Erica sent you. That should
make her smile.

I love going to
the hairdresser...
Terry Ritcey Salon is at 122A Yorkville right in the heart of the
posh part of town. Know what I love about this place? There's not
a hint of pretension here. The staff is warm and welcoming, there's
never any waiting and I always enjoy the excellent service with
a smile. Eduarda styles my hair, dispenses charming advice about
life in general and (most important of all) never makes my bangs
too short.

I recommend a
retreat just 90 minutes from Toronto...
Ste. Anne's Country Inn and Spa is more than just a spa. It is an
oasis from the stresses of life in the 90's -- a retreat outside
Toronto that's all about wellness, rejuvenation, and relaxation.
Picture a huge, but cozy, old stone house each room decorated in
its own unique, country-style decor. My accommodation had hunter-green
walls, hard-wood floors, large stone fireplace, twin beds with fluffy
duvets and a large bathtub with jets.
The spa offers a variety of packages--half day or full day treatments
that include everything from massage to mud bath and body polish
to herbal body wrap. There's yoga, stretch, cardio, Tai Chi classes
and much more. My personal favorite was simply walking their wooded
country trails and relaxing.
By car, Ste. Anne's is one hour and fifteen minutes from Toronto
or Via Rail provides regular daily service to Cobourg (fifteen minutes
from Ste. Ann's). The spa will provide transportation packages that
include your train tickets and limousine pickup from the station.
Their local phone number is 1-905-349-2493 or 888-346-6772 outside
Toronto.

One perfect pedicure
coming up...
At Civello's day spa, they've just installed mini whirlpool tubs
for fatigued feet . Just fabulous! And while the salon is usually
very busy and appointments hard to come by, I'm always content to
wait for a time when Sallyann Hines is free. She's terrific with
toe nails, her foot massages with calming or energizing Aveeda oils
are divine and because she's British, she supplies me with hints
on cool shopping in London. Great bonus! (887 Yonge Street Tel:
