Award for Best Native American
Influence...
Golden Door Spa
Journeywoman
awards top rating in this category to the Golden
Door Spa at the Boulders
for their signature treatment, The Turquoise Wrap. Fifty
minutes long, it's goal is detoxification and grounding, however
we also found the procedure extremely interesting -- an excellent
foray into Native American culture and the healing techniques
they've practised in the Southwestern United States. It's believed
that turquoise is a colour of protection, self-confidence and
positive energy. During the session Hopi blue cornmeal is used
in the brisk exfoliation process, followed by an ionized turquoise
clay wrap (the clay has a lovely silk feel and produces a warm
drawing sensation). The therapist then soothes the guest into
a pleasant meditative state by performing a rainstick ritual and
using lemongrass and sandlewood essential oils to help cleanse
the spirit. After a slow shower comes a final full-body honey
masque plus steam designed to nourish the skin and please the
senses. Don't plan anything else after this treatment. All you'll
want to do is nap and continue to dream of a time gone by.

Extraordinary Spa Pedicure...
The Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain
What
do most women do once they book a spa holiday? They immediately
schedule a pre-trip appointment for a pedicure, squeezing yet
another item into their very busy agenda. Journeywoman suggests
that you rethink this timing. Why not program that pedicure into
your first days of spa hopping? This way you'll truly relax and
enjoy your pleasures to the fullest.
The "Best Pedicure"
category goes to The Sanctuary on Camelback
Mountain for providing their clients with sixty minutes of
heavenly bliss. The pedicurist understands that this service is
not only about your feet -- rather a good pedicure affects you head
to toe. You are invited to relax in the spa's comfy armchair which
is immediately adjusted to the contours of the back. In this way
vibrations can be delivered along your body via waves or in a steady
rhythm. Feet are immersed in a Jacuzzi bath with a cool mint treatment
added. Need more hot or cold? Just say the word. A heating element
in the foot tub keeps the temperature constant. Ah-h-h, the luxury!
Once nails are shaped and cuticles
tamed, guests enjoy a hand massage and an "up-to-the-knee"
exfoliating mint scrub as well as moisturizing massage. Then comes
the paraffin wax dip followed by the donning of terry cloth booties
designed to seal in heat for maximum benefit.
Picking the polish color for
your toe nails can be considered a Journeywoman adventure. All the
colours come in tiny bottles with each rich shade named after a
travel destination -- titles like Taos: shimmering brown bronze,
Manhattan: rich tomato red or Sonoma: a deep shade of burgundy.
The finishing touch? Guests receive a "footsie bag" containing
the rest of the nail polish and all the other paraphernalia used
in their pedicure (file, buffer, cuticle stick) for touch-ups at
home. What a smart idea! |
Outstanding Spa Design and
Ambiance...
Willow Stream Spa, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess
Finally....
it was love at first sight when Journeywoman stepped into the
three-level Willow Stream Spa at
the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess.
Listen carefully and you'll probably hear the calming sounds of
the spa's waterfall on each of those restful treatment and relaxation
floors. From the rooftop pool to the atrium on the ground floor,
Willow Stream sprawls over an impressive 44,000 square feet --
its design and ambiance one of soothing natural colours and elements.
Think stacked-rock walls, redwood furniture and flooring, basalt
rocks, wooden bowls brimming with red and green apples, earth
tones, natural light, large pottery pots, graceful palms and succulents.
As far we're concerned, any
spa management looking for exciting renovation ideas should pay
a visit to Willow Stream before they begin their own work. This
spa is an oasis of pure hospitality, serenity and absolute calm. |
