Bonus tip ...

Throughout Rome there are green, octagonal kiosks with "i"s on them. These are Info Points and from 9:00AM -5:00PM they are staffed with English speaking staff who can help direct visitors to local places as well as give information about what's going on in the city. They offer a huge array of free publications including free city maps, notices about art exhibitions and cultural events, and often a free magazine called Where that has lots of restaurant reviews and articles about Rome. There's also a local number one can call for tourist information: 06 06 06. It's just been put into service recently and may not be working completely smoothly yet, however, it's worth a try.

Bonus tip ...

I'm a big fan of the ElleEffe salon in Trastevere in Rome. The stylists speak English and do a great job at a reasonable price. It's just off Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, so easy to find. Address: Via di San Calisto 6/6a. Telephone: 06 583 33 875 or 06 583 43 483. They're closed on Mondays but open until midnight on Thursdays. They do hair, but also pedicures, manicures, waxing, facials, massage and lots more.

Also there's a great gym in Termini train station and travelers can use it by paying by the visit. It's run by a British chain and is called Fitness First. It's very clean, efficient, friendly, well-staffed and well-taken care off. Precise address is Via Giolitti 42. Phone numbers: 800 60 60 85 or 06 478 26 300.

Did you know that pasta was already being produced in Italy in the mid-12th century, more than 100 years before Venetian explorer Marco Polo supposedly brought it back from his trip to China?
