JourneyWomen Recommend
Hotels in Paris...
Evelyn Hannon
Thanks to our Journeywoman
Network, we're constantly receiving tips on hotels (big and small)
that other women around the world have stayed in and enjoyed. We recently
checked our files and located at least a dozen recommendations for
hotels in Paris. When reading these mini reviews, please remember
that rates do go up, owners move on and standards as well as telephone
numbers often change. Journeywoman suggests that you use these tips
as a jumping off point. If you'd like to know more about any of these
places, you can (in most cases) verify the details via your favorite
search engine. Most hotel sites will also offer readers' reviews that
you can compare with the ones posted below.
Appropriate for
women travellers...
I
recommend the Left Bank's Hotel
Littre. It fits our company's parameters for the
appropriate city hotel for women. It's clean, comfortable
and some of the rooms even have hairdryers in the wall. It
is safe. The concierge desk is located near the front entrance
and doors are locked after hours. The hotel has less than
100 rooms, only one set of stairs and one elevator, both visible
from the front desk. The street has traffic with both stores
and restaurants open at night (not noisy but plenty of street
life which is reassuring in the evening). If you prefer to
picnic as I do, there are plenty of places to buy wine, bread,
cheese, etc. Hotel Littre is beautifully located - one half
block from public transportation which includes Montparnasse
Train Station, Metro and buses. For further information contact:
Hotel Littre, 9 rue Littre, Paris, 75006.

Many rooms
have kitchens...
I'd like to let other JourneyWomen
know that a good hotel in the 9th arrondissement is the Hotel
Alba-Opera Residence. Address: 34 ter, rue de la
Tour d'Auvergne. Phone: 33.1.48.78.80.22. Many rooms have kitchens
(there are many good food stores in the neighbourhood). If you
want a quiet room with no street noise, ask for a room "donnant
sur la cour".

A budget
hotel in Paris...
When
a hotel I booked in Paris turned out to be a dump, I found
Hotel des Arts et Mtiers at 4 rue Borda in the
third arrondissement. It is located across the street from the
Arts et Mtiers museum as well as the metro stop. For about
US$45.00 a night (in June) I got a lovely room, clean and bright
with beautiful tile work on the floor and private bath, which
had a nice shower and fluffy towel. There was TV with remote,
large, comfy bed, and a very courteous, eager-to-please family
reception. They take credit cards, too. Phone: 01.48.87.73.89.
P.S. I suggest you skip breakfast, which is extra, and not very
reasonable. You can do much better at a cafe in the neighbourhood.

A Left Bank
neighbourhood...
The three-star Hotel
Ares is located in a picturesque neighbourhood far
away from the tourist hoopla but only ten minutes from the Champs-Elysses,
Eiffel Tower and Champ de Mars. Rooms are bright and spacious,
bathrooms are large and there's CNN and hairdryers in every room.
Gals can enjoy the markets, bistros and shops within this quarter
or hop the metro around the corner to travel further afield. Address:
7 Rue de General de Larminat, Paris 75015.

A no-star hotel
in Paris...
Whenever
I go to Paris alone I like to stay at Hotel
Eden. It is very basic and located in the 15th arr.
with many shops around -- a bakery, fruit store, wine shop, bookstore,
drugstore, a small park, and it's only a 5 min. walk to Metro
Vaugirard. From there, with a metro map, you can get anywhere,
discover Paris and enjoy! This hotel is so neat and run by very
nice people, room with w-c-shower and 2 single beds, or a double
bed for quite a cheap price (by Paris standards) even includes
breakfast with milk coffee to dip your baguette la franaise.
That's Paris at Hotel Eden - 110 Blomet, Paris 15e - Tel: 01.48.28.13.95,

The artistic
Left Bank...
I recommend Hotel
Collège de France. This is the perfect example
of a Left Bank hotel. Expect nicely furnished, carpeted, sunny
rooms in its six charming stories. Don't miss the lovely, large
attic rooms with gorgeous French windows. This place has lots
of character, great views, and a few balconies -- always a plus
in Paris! Every room features a toilet and a bath or shower, and
the invaluable hair drier. Check out #62, a particularly pretty
and very large attic room. It has wood-beamed ceilings, a balcony,
and two French windows. Very nice! Address: 7, rue Thnard, Mtro:
Maubert Mutualit (5th Arrondissement), Contact: Tel: 0143267836.

And on the Right
Bank...
I
suggest Hotel Londres Saint Honor,
a wonderful, charming, five-storey 18th-century hotel. Rooms are
large, nicely furnished, and carpeted. Some even have air-conditioning,
and all are soundproofed and feature minibars and hair driers.
There are laundry services and non-smoking rooms as well. Don't
let this hotel fool you: you'll find reception one flight up.

in the 1st Arondissement) Contact: Tel: 0142601562. Fax: 0142601600
