This Month's Hot Deals

Israel - The People Make the Place - Part 1

Evelyn Hannon

Recently I did what I always suggest to others. Take a break from routine. So, I stepped away from my computer, packed a bag and headed out to explore Israel, a destination very different from my own. This was a month long holiday without any travel assignments to concentrate on or deadlines to meet. Instead, each day I left my Tel Aviv rental apartment to meander with camera in hand. My goal was to take at least one photo and attempt a mini-interview with a subject I met during that day. Each evening, I posted my images and conversations on Facebook. It proved to be so successful that I decided to recreate it here in a three-part posting of a dozen photos each.

I've called the series, 'Israel - The People Make the Place.' I loved the multiculturalism and diversity I came face to face with. I hope you enjoy reading about my encounters as much as I enjoyed 'living' them.

Carpet Seller

This is the carpet seller in the Jaffa flea market.
As I walked by his shop he called out ...
Buy a carpet? ... pointing to a medium size rug.
Me: No thank you. I don't need a carpet.
He: Here's a smaller one.
Me: No thanks but ... may I take your photo?
He: OK, OK, take my picture.
Me: But I still won't buy one of your carpets. OK?
He: (smiling) OK, OK.

Wonderful hair

Have you ever seen such wonderful hair? That's one of the things I love about this part of the world. Such an interesting mixture of people!

Jummous server

I went to lunch in Tel Aviv with a local JourneyWoman. She chose a restaurant called, 'Hummous.' Haha ... That made me smile because it's like saying to your friend, 'I'll meet you at 'chick pea spread' (English translation for 'hummous'). After our meal I asked our server if I could take her photo. She spoke so little English (I believe her first language is Arabic) that I had to get her manager to translate. Turns out I chose wisely. Not only is this woman quite lovely but today is her 23rd birthday!

Clergy man

I took this photo In the Christian Quarter of the Old City in Jerusalem. Normally I wouldn't stop a clergy man to ask him to pose for a photo but this man was so darn cool. There he was in the midst of the hustle and bustle taking his own photos so I thought ... what the heck, I'll ask. He was perfectly obliging and this is the result.

Israeli Soldier

I met this lovely young woman in a small town called, Gan Yavneh. She is 17 years old. Next year she will begin her Israeli army training.
Me: What will you miss most when you go into the army?
She: My bed, my jeans, my shoes, and my boyfriend.
Me: What don't you want to do during your army training?
She: I don't want to serve coffee to the Generals!
(That's my kind of girl)

Benny + Masha

Meet Israelis Benny and Masha. He arrived in Tel Aviv from Brussels on the 15th of May, 1949. She is a 'Sabra' (the term for Israelis born in Israel). They met and married here.
Me: How long have you been married?
They: 44 years
Me: What is your secret?
She: Friendship, compromise and love.
He: LOVE, that's it!
So... I've decided to title this photo. 'Love, love, LOVE.'
