The World Trade Center (WTC) was a complex of seven buildings in Lower Manhattan in New York City that was destroyed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The site is currently being rebuilt with six new skyscrapers and a memorial to the casualties of the attacks. During that event 2,752 victims lost their lives including 343 New York City firefighters, 84 Port Authority employees, of whom 37 were members of the Port Authority Police Department, and 23 were New York City Police Department officers .
I first paid my respects at the Ground Zero site in New York City soon after the terrorist attack in 2001. It was a surreal experience to stare down into a huge pit where buildings had once stood and where so many people had perished. Now, 10 years later I was back to acknowledge that past and to look into the future.
