Women in Publishing Society (WIPS) can be a
good resource for visiting journalists and any women working in
the communication arts. Especially good if their visits coincide
with the regular monthly meeting, usually the first Wed of each
month, held upstairs at the Foreign Correspondents' Club (Upper
Ice House street, Central). President Kay Ross can be reached at:
kayross@hkstar.com. The
WIPS web site is at: http://www.hkwips.org

Ed. note: I attended a WIPS
meeting when I was in Hong Kong. Everybody was extremely welcoming
and supportive. They taught me a lot about HK from a womans
point of view and I thank them. |

Foreign Correspondents' Club (Upper Ice House
street, Central) is another great networking resource; cheap food
and booze also on offer.Especially entertaining on Friday nights
when local journos gather to trade gossip and opinions. This club
is for members only, but I believe visiting journalists can get
temporary membership (or buy bar chits) upon presentation of a valid
press card.

There are two organizations that I recommend for women moving
to Hong Kong. They offer groups for new comers as well as all kinds
of courses pertaining to language, culture, history, outings and
shopping. The first is called the American Women's Organisation
(AWA) but it's not just for Americans; everybody is welcome.
Their telephone number is 2527 2961, website: http://www.awa.org.hk
or simply show up for their weekly coffee & chat at the Marriott
Hotel's coffee shop. The second is the Y's English speaking
members department. Their telephone number is 3476 1340,
website: http://www.esmdywca.org.hk.
A lot of women join both, pick and choose from their activities
and make use of the members' discounts they each have for places
around town. Feel free to be in touch.

Laundry for less...
When
in Hong Kong, I found a laundry that did a magnificent job at
a fraction of what the hotels charge. Mankee Laundry
(Shop 24, Ground Floor, Hankow Apartments, 49 Hankow Road, Tsimshatsui)
will clean up to six pounds of laundry for $18HKD. The laundry
offers same day service and is open Monday-Saturday from 8 a.m.
to 8 p.m. (closed Sundays). Generally speaking, if you want to
avoid the high prices of hotel laundry don't be afraid to ask
the concierge to direct you to the nearest dry cleaner or self-service
laundry. They will often have a mini-directory of vendors in the
neighborhood and will give you several leads.
