International Women's Day 2014 - Celebrating the Diversity of Women

Bonnie Branson, Ruidoso, New Mexico

I met Bonnie Branson in Ruidoso, New Mexico at her culinary studio. In 2013, she was diagnosed with cancer, causing her to close her studio, relocate to Texas for treatment and battle for her life. In a heroic display of courage, Bonnie has embarked on her cancer journey with the boldness of the most intrepid explorers.

I am woman...

Lotus KarateI am woman hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong
I am invincible
I am woman

Girl in Petra, Jordan

There she was with that cute little smile! Immediately upon my arrival into the ancient city of Petra, Jordan, I spotted her. It didn't take her long to spot me too! With her "one denar" chime, I knew I had lost my Jordanian money!

Eveline, Rapa Nui Tour Guide

Eveline is a badass Rapa Nui tour guide. Some find her abrasive, but I loved her sassy, no-nonsense attitude and pride for the heritage of Easter Island.

Colours of Malaysia festival, Kuala Lumpur

I took this photo during one of the parades at the Colours of Malaysia festival in Kuala Lumpur. There's something about her -- maybe it's her eyes, maybe it's the way she's draped in gold - that had stayed with me ever since this moment.

Burma refugees

Working on the Moie River on the Thai/Burma border we came across a group of Burmese refugees washing on the river banks. These women were strong, vibrant, full of life and smiles. This little girl had a sweet twinkle in her eye as she is being 'cleaned up' by her mom.

Woman with ring in nose

We met this woman while hiking the Everest Region in Nepal. She smiled a lot and gestured that she wanted us to take her photo. As you can see the smile disappeared as soon as we pointed the camera at her. Then she stood, smiling (again) and waved until we were out of view.

Two sisters, Myanmar

I was invited in the house of these two sisters when I cycled into their village in Myanmar. We didn't speak each other's language but we communicated and laughed all afternoon. That's what women do!

Whistles in Vietnam

This elderly Vietnamese woman was selling clay whistles at the roadside in Hoi An. She was more than happy for me to click away for a minute. Of course I didn't leave without buying a whistle...
